Image-Stacking: motion-compensated superimposing (eg by averageing) of objects in a set or sequence of images
I’ve traditionally used RegiStax, currently at version 6. It works, but I wonder if there are any alternatives, since:
- It is a little clunky and crashy.
- It only seems (unless I’ve missed something) to do plain averaging, not more robust (to noise and blurring) such as median or motion-estimated deconvolution etc.
- It works on the basis of tracking-points, not textures (as does Mocha). Textures are more robust.
I’ll give AstroStack a try.

- {There are manystacking programs but not all are suited to planetary observations}
- Registax is fabulous for planetary processing (that’s basically what it was written for)
- Don’t think I would use Astrovideo for planets.
- deepskystack’s author specifically states it’s not designed for planetary work. … you might also try K3CCD tool for planetary work
- I would not (suggest) anything except Registax. … K3CCD is the only other program I know of that is used a lot for planetary stacking.
- I did not realise K3CCD Tools could be used for post-processing (I thought it was a purely capture / camera control software).
- you should probably check in the solar system imaging forum. they’re probably much more familiar with the finer points of registax. there may even be an faq or tutorial link on registax there.
- You could also try Astrostack which can also be used for webcam planetary work.
